A quick introduction to me and my writing
My name is Deepa, a queer agender Indian-American person in my thirties; please use my name instead of pronouns when you refer to me! You may know me from my other newsletter queer short cuts, where I recommend queer short films from around the world; that newsletter has been on a bit of a hiatus recently but I’m planning to get it restarted as well.
A little about me: I was born and (mostly) raised in Seattle, Washington in the United States; I’ve lived in a number of different places throughout my life, including a couple stints outside the U.S., but Seattle is the place I have primarily called home and is where I live now. I work in local climate policy, which is my main area of expertise, but I’ve also done a lot of community organizing, both professionally and in my spare time. I have long COVID, which I developed after my first known COVID infection in 2022, which has disabled me pretty significantly, and, among other things, changed the ways in which I can organize.
I created this newsletter as a space for long-form nonfiction writing about topics I care about. Climate justice will certainly be one of them, but I also plan to discuss prison abolition and psychiatric abolition, caste abolition & anti-Hindutva movements, Palestinian liberation, long COVID and disability justice, and more! There may even be a smattering of poetry or fiction writing sometimes, we’ll see. Oh, and maybe some occasional talk about women’s soccer and basketball!
This newsletter will never be monetized, but I believe that mutual aid is one of the ways we can build community and protect our own, so every post of mine will link to a mutual aid request. Mutual Aid Request
